Uranium is enriched to increase the concentration of the isotope uranium-235, which is necessary for nuclear reactions. Natural uranium consists mostly of the isotope uranium-238, which is not as easily fissionable as uranium-235. By enriching uranium, the concentration of uranium-235 is increased, making it suitable for use in nuclear reactors and weapons. This enrichment process allows for more efficient and controlled nuclear reactions. **

The possession of enriched uranium is highly regulated and restricted by international treaties and agreements, such as the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). Enriched uranium is primarily used for nuclear power generation and medical purposes, but it can also be used to create nuclear weapons. Therefore, its possession is tightly controlled to prevent its misuse and proliferation. Only countries that are party to these treaties and have the necessary safeguards and oversight in place are allowed to possess and use enriched uranium. **
